Sofia was born in Guatemala and from a young age was exposed to art as several women in her family were Guatemalan artists who painted with watercolors, ink, and oils.

In 2006 Sofia moved to the United States to study and work and, in her free time, painted sporadically. It was not until 2019, when her mother was diagnosed with leukemia, that she reconnected with art. During that time, creating art allowed her to process her feelings and center herself. Since then, she invites art into her daily life and finds her “moment of flow” painting abstract art.

Her style and the colors she uses are inspired by the nature that surrounds her, especially during the years she lived in California. The sea, the sand, the waves, and the rocks inspire her to capture in her creation a feeling of tranquility with movement. Sofia is also inspired by her daily life, the love for her son, and the transformative experience of being a mother. She adds rough elements to her paintings, to represent the unpredictable moments and the disorder that sometimes accompany us in life.

Using acrylics, sand, and pencil on paper or canvas, Sofia seeks to balance the intuitive and calculated elements of her work, making space for the soft and the stark. Her pieces invite the observer to get closer to the art and explore the details.
